What An Ex-Boyfriend Should Never Do….

Posted on Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Blog

The Facebook Status – Oh, the Dilemma!

As I told you a while back, I’m still picking up the pieces after breaking up, oh well… I’m not the kind of gal who drowns her sorrows in alcohol or other drugs. Instead, I decided to spend a night catching up with my friends on Facebook and breaking a few records of hours playing addictive Cityville and stuff. I prepared myself a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate and I sat in front of my computer…..all is going well, then next thing I know, I shriek as I had spilled half of my hot cup of chocolate on my brand spakin’ new white shirt! And all because of what?! My Facebook status had suddenly changed: from ‘In a relationship with…’ to ‘single’! Grrrrrr!

Wait, what??? How dare he! Yes, we had broken up, but I didn’t intend to make it so public so soon! Of course, he had decided it for me, but he could have at least asked me first, right? On Facebook, once you no longer agree on being “in a relationship” with someone, apparently all the other person’s friends can see it as well! So far, I had only spoken to my best friend, not my entire family and then suddenly, I was getting all kinds of messages from acquaintances, relatives, and –the horror, the horror!- even co-workers. Here are a few (which, by the way, no one even cared to make private!):

- “You hang in there, girlfriend, he is not worth your tears” (who said I had cried, BTW?)
- “There are many fish in the sea” (yep, and he was one of the most smelly!)
- “My poor baby girl, I understand more than anyone the sorrow you must be going through!” (This was from my great-auntie, a 70-year old maid…)

Etc, etc, etc.

I felt like an ostrich, I wanted to bury my head deep in the ground! The embarrassment!!! Don’t get this the wrong way; I was not embarrassed because I’m single. After all, if anything, I feel great about being single again. It was my decision and I stand for it! The thing that upset me was, after 67 messages in my wall, I felt like I needed to say something as a response to all of this “concern”. Like I needed to make a public statement about our private break up. I hadn’t considering making a statement about my relationship status change, but I just couldn’t let the rest of the world believe that I was alone and miserable! So this is what I decided to do: if I had to deal with a Facebook situation, I’d deal with it the Facebook kind of way!

I created an new event: “Celebration! I’m single again and LIFE IS GREAT! Everyone’s invited for drinks and comedy videos next Friday! If you are happy for me, say you’ll be there!”

And a bunch of friends and I ended up having a great time after the office, enjoying our cocktails and comedy videos on the big screen!

(And, in case you are wondering, no, my auntie wasn’t there…….)

But this surely got to my ex’s attention too, so it’s great that he can see that I may have been down, but I am surely not out! I’m on to bigger and brighter things and will surely find the right person for me now that he’s out of my life. Sure, I wish he hadn’t gone the Facebook route of telling the world about our very personal situation, but by creating a celebratory event around it, I answered as a true trooper and champion!

It never ceases to amaze me the critically personal information that I find on Facebook every single day, does it amaze you? What would you do if your ex-boyfriend did something like this to you, making your private, intimate details of life with him available for the world to see? Sometimes I guess you just have to fight fire with fire and thank goodness, I’ve got loads of torches! One thing is for sure, I refuse to carry a torch for him! :-) !

Upwards and Onwards my friends!

Laughter At The Workplace

Posted on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Blog

The Power Of Laughter At Work

I have always been a pretty happy person able to see the positive side of situations. I see the glass half full and try to laugh instead of cry. Lately, my sense of humor has undergone some real tribulation at my job. You would never believe how the power of laughter is getting me through crazy, awkward, and even infuriating situations at work.

The Situation

You have to understand a few things about my work environment in order to fully grasp just how impressive this power of laughter thing is. First of all, take into account my “mean girls” co-workers. I try not to wear my heart on my sleeve so that I’m not too devastated when things don’t go as expected. But in the meantime I try to be as pleasant as I can with the people I work with, which isn’t so easy, given the mean streak some of these people have.

There are these 2 ladies in particular, who are constantly trying to ambush my work. Instead of working with me to bring a better product to our customers, they are far more concerned with winning the attentions of our young boss by making me look inept. And, to be honest, I can’t say I blame them on that point. That’s the other thing…

The Heart Throb Complications

Mr. XYZ, we’ll call him, (God forbid he would actually read my blog and find out how crazy in love I am with him!) is as dreamy as they come – young, handsome, ambitious, and nearly always wearing that boyish grin. I admit: I’m completely infatuated with him too. Unfortunately, I never make a very good impression when our paths cross, whether in the foyer or at the water cooler – not that it’s often. Still, I somehow manage to screw up even those few opportunities. Oh, and by the way…….he is also my boss.

I shudder just to think of the time I found toilet paper trailing off my brand spanking new high heeled shoes (picked out that morning specifically in case I should meet Mr. XYZ that day). It didn’t help my self-esteem to see the “mean girls” snickering at my dilemma from across the hall.

Coffee.org-Makes it Easy to Fill your Coffee Mug

My day, actually… my whole life – could easily have been ruined by that situation. Fortunately, my sense of humor quickly had me seeing the comedy in what had transpired. I comfort myself by hoping Mr. XYZ found it endearing instead of revolting and hope he thinks I intentionally bestowed on him a gift of laughter. (not such a bad way to look at it, right?)

My Promise to Myself

As for the “mean girls”, they are continually proving the benefits of laughter in the workplace, this is why I’ve promised myself to take it with me everyday. I could be a nervous wreck at work, always looking over my shoulder because of the things they’ve done. Instead, when they intentionally fail to make an important phone call for me or get the information I need, I seize the opportunity to prove my own resourcefulness. I’m a better worker for it and my sense of wellbeing has proven resilient. The power of laughter and a continuous mindset of lightheartedness is what motivates me out to get up, dress up, and show up at work every morning with a smile! (….or at least most mornings!)

Can There Be Laughter When The Relationship Ends?

Posted on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in Blog

How Laughter Helped Me When I Was In The Dumps

The benefits of laughter have helped me through more things than you would probably care to hear. If I had to pick one experience in which the gift of laughter has made a marked difference in my life, it would have to be one that we women are all too familiar with: the ugly breakup.

Well, mine wasn’t exactly “ugly” per say. In fact, it was quite civil. “Feelings change” is what he told me. We had been dating for two years and it seems the monotony of life’s routine and a monogamous relationship was too boring for him. But I felt it too – the lack of excitement and passion. Our being in love just faded away quietly. Maybe it’s the lack of passion in the breakup that made it ugly to me.

After the breakup, I was faced with one of two options: mourn the loss of my long-term boyfriend or pick myself up and move on. So many of my friends were already married and had families. I felt like I was back at square one. Having been through this before, another breakup threatened to push me over the edge. But once I realized that it was more the idea of a long-term relationship that saddened me than the person himself, I decided on the latter.

During this season of new beginnings I used comedy as a crutch to get myself laughing again. Through daily comic strips emailed to my inbox and marathons of the The Office, I rediscovered the gift of laughter. Whether I’m laughing at goofy animals on America’s Funniest Videos or laughing at myself, laughter has proven to be more than a superficial expression of happiness.

Through my personal tragedy of lost love, and more so because of it, I have discovered that laughter is so much more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a healthy dose of positivism and medicine for the soul. The more I incorporated happiness and laughter into my daily life, the happier I became and the easier it was to see goodness in the world around me.

The benefits of laughter so positively lifted me that I sought to share it with others. I poured myself into my relationship with family, friends, and co-workers. Learning to laugh at myself has helped relieve stress at work, frustrations of life, and kept me from slipping into depression.

This journey of discovery was like a makeover for my heart and soul. Now that I’m happy in life and with myself, I’m no longer dependent on a significant other for love and laughter. I am self-sufficient. And I know that the inner beauty I have developed through laughing at myself will attract Mr. Right when the time is right.

Comedy Or Real Life Inspiration?

The Simpsons – Not Just A Comedy Show!
By Neveen Gohar

Ever saw more to a simple TV show than just entertainment? I think some shows have hidden messages that can be truly inspiring.

Everyone, including those not very interested in cartoons, heard about “The Simpsons”. It is a long-running series created by Matt Groening, with 21 seasons and the 22nd currently running. As my personal favorite, I have noticed a lot of hidden messages in different episodes, beyond a sarcastic comedy show.

Never give up…

The episode “The last exit to Springfield-Season 4″ is about a strike at the nuclear power plant where Homer works, because Mr. Burns – the boss – wants to take away the dental plan from the workers. It was Homer who started the strike (despite his usually lazy character) because his daughter, Lisa, happens to need braces on the very same day. The way Homer negotiates with the evil Mr. Burns till he gets his rights, without accepting dishonest bribe, is remarkable and depicts how rights can be taken, fair and square, with consistency and the never-give- up attitude.

Don’t believe everything…

“Treehouse of horror” are a series of episodes that include horror fantasies, one in every season, and are usually associated with Halloween. In the episode “Treehouse of Horror VI -Season 7″, Homer, who adores doughnuts, manages to steal a doughnut held by Lard Lad, the mascot for a doughnut store. Eventually, all mascots from all stores start attacking people!!! And guess what saves him along with everyone in town..Ignoring them!! It is noteworthy that the writer indirectly warned people about advertising fallacies, since advertisements now evaded our TVs, newspapers, streets, buses, everywhere…

It’s our good memories that keep us bonded…

In the episode “Lisa on ice- Season 6″, Lisa fails gym and is selected by coincidence to join a hockey team, which is her only chance to add gym to her straight As.She and her brother Bart start being so competitive since Bart is already good at sports and plays hockey too, until one day both teams challenge each other, a game that both Bart and Lisa took too seriously…The final shot in the game is a penalty shot by Bart against Lisa, but then…they looked to each other and remembered all the good gestures they did to each other when they were younger (like Lisa helping Bart when his knee was injured, and Bart giving one of his ice-cream scoops because hers which fell on the floor). Lisa smiled and Bart smiled back….They dropped the hockey equipment and gave each other a nice brotherly hug. This highlights the fact that no matter what happens, you will always find a lot to remember for the people you love, your family and friends or even co-workers, so there’s no point at all in letting life shake the special bonds you share with your loved ones…

Show appreciation…

In another episode “Homer Alone- Season 3″, Marge gets too worked out from the housework and from the extra stress because no one in the family is helping. They all just expect her to do every little thing and listen to each and every complain or question they have. So she decides to go on a vacation by herself, leaving Bart and Lisa to their not-so-loved twin aunts, Patty and Selma, and leaves baby Maggie with Homer. When she leaves to Rancho Relaxo to get a calming vacation, Homer realizes he can do nothing without her, and the kids aren’t that happy either at their aunts’. Upon Marge’s return, she finds what a mess her family has been without her, and that’s when they start realizing what she really is…

Clearly, it applies to many of our own homes, when someone is doing all the hard work – a mother, a father or even grandparents- without even getting a “Thank you” in return. It simply urges us to appreciate every little favor done to us, even outside the house, from friends or colleagues and makes us think of those special people in our lives, who do too much and ask too little.
